The Origin of the Name

The beach is named in homage to the statue that stands near the sandy area: O Homem do Leme (The Man at the Helm). This bronze sculpture, by Américo Gomes, dates from 1934 and is a tribute to the city's historical connection to its fishermen, symbolizing their courage and work at sea.
