Praia do Castelo do Queijo is located in the Nevogilde area, in the city of Porto, positioned near the mouth of the Douro River. This beach fully integrates into the city's urban environment, benefiting from direct accessibility and a coastal atmosphere characteristic of this part of Porto's coastline.
The beach's name is inseparable from the fortification that presides over it: the Fort of São Francisco Xavier, popularly known as Castelo do Queijo (Cheese Castle). According to local tradition, its peculiar denomination derives from the fact that it was built on a large, rounded granite rock, whose shape resembled a wheel of cheese, thus conferring a unique identity to the entire place.
Praia do Castelo do Queijo is characterized by a moderately sized sandy area, interspersed with various rocky outcrops that appear along the waterline. These rock formations add a distinctive element to the coastal landscape, providing an interesting natural setting for visitors. The presence of these rocks invites a more exploratory walk by the sea, offering different perspectives of the surroundings.
Dominating the landscape of this coastal stretch, the Fort of São Francisco Xavier, dating from the 17th century, stands imposingly right next to the beach. This ancient defensive structure, built of stone masonry, with its robust walls and bastions at the corners, remarkably integrates into the horizon. Its historical and architectural presence is a central element in the beach's identity, giving it a scenic dimension and a particular visual setting.
