Praia do Aterro is a coastal sandy area located in Leça da Palmeira, in the municipality of Matosinhos, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. Its location is in front of an industrial area, which earned it the informal designation of "Sacor" among local inhabitants, a reference to the old name of the refinery present there. Its position offers a wide perspective over the coast.
This sandy area is characterized by its breadth, extending for approximately 1.1 kilometers. Its natural surroundings include vegetation that frames the coastal landscape. To the south, the beach reaches its limit at a natural rock formation, near the mouth of the Ribeira da Boa Nova. This combination of elements contributes to a distinctive and diverse coastal environment.
The maritime conditions at Praia do Aterro are marked by the presence of offshore rocks, which influence the swell, often making the sea rough. These characteristics make it a popular spot for those who practice surf and bodyboard, attracting an audience seeking challenging waves. The beach can present longer waves near rock formations to the north and specific waves to the south. It is important to be aware of the possibility of strong currents. To fully enjoy its conditions for water sports, the low tide period is generally the most suitable.
Praia do Aterro has been consistently recognized for its environmental quality and accessibility. Over the years, it has been distinguished with awards such as the Blue Flag, the Gold Flag, and the classification of Accessible Beach. These distinctions attest to its commitment to environmental excellence and inclusion, contributing to a pleasant and safe experience for all visitors.
