Located in the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim, Santo André Beach is situated in the area of Aguçadoura and Navais, next to the small fishing community of Santo André. This coastal area stands out for its serene atmosphere, offering a quieter experience away from the bustling city center.
Santo André Beach features an extensive sandy area that invites long walks and moments of enjoyment by the sea. In this landscape, traces of dunes can still be found, a valuable natural element less common on many urban beaches. To preserve this environment and facilitate circulation, there are wooden walkways that run along the coastline.
Along the beach, the presence of rock formations aligned in the sand is visible, which give it a unique identity and, at times, the designation of "Praia dos Cabos". The sea, characteristically calm, makes this a pleasant place for swimming and relaxation.
One of the most striking aspects of Santo André Beach is its deep connection to the local fishing culture and its ancient beliefs. Next to the sandy area, there is a simple chapel dedicated to Saint Andrew, a figure of great devotion for fishermen.
Near the chapel, the Penedo do Santo (Saint's Rock) captures attention: a rock where, according to legend, there is a mark attributed to the footprint of Saint Andrew himself. It is believed that this saint has the power to rescue the souls of those who drown at sea, a belief that reinforces the community's faith and connection to the ocean. Annually, in the early morning of the last day of November, the Festa de Santo André (Saint Andrew's Festival) is celebrated, an event that testifies to the strength of these traditions. Groups of men and women, dressed in dark cloaks and carrying lanterns, head to the hermitage along the beach, chanting ancestral songs. Finally, they circle the chapel in a ritual known as the "Ponto das almas" (Point of Souls), a genuine manifestation of local identity and spirituality.
