Arnelas Beach is a river beach located on the left bank of the Douro River, integrated into the locality of Arnelas, which belongs to the civil parish of Olival, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. Its position is peculiar, as the village itself develops on a slope, extending towards the river until it reaches this bathing area.
This river beach is bathed by the tranquil waters of the Douro, offering a serene environment. Its natural configuration features a gentle slope that invites relaxation and sunbathing, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural scenery that surrounds it. The river landscape provides a space for calm and contemplation.
For the safety of its visitors, a portion of the beach is delimited for swimming. Regarding water activities, it is a suitable place for canoeing and kayaking, and it is even possible to find a canoeing school nearby. It is important to note that the presence of pets is tolerated, provided that cleanliness and good conduct rules are respected.
Arnelas, the village where the beach is located, has a rich and ancient history, dating back to pre-Roman times, with traces of a settlement believed to have been affected by ancient Douro floods. In the past, this area was an important river port on the Douro, especially during the 19th century. It was a vital point for trade and the movement of goods, such as salt from Aveiro, Douro wines, and other agricultural products and timber. The Arnelas Quay, still present, is a physical testament to this legacy and its historical relevance as a center for trade and river fishing.
Arnelas Beach is adjacent to a structure designed for leisure and the community: the Arnelas-Olival Popular Recreation Center. Opened in 2004, this center was designed to complement the bathing area, serving as a support and meeting point. It contributes to the revitalization of the space, fostering socializing and recreational activities along the banks of the Douro River.
