Salgueira Beach stretches along the urban area of Póvoa de Varzim, integrated into the Fishing Quarter. It is a central point on the city's coastline, traversed by Avenida dos Banhos, one of its main bathing thoroughfares. At its southern end, the beach is flanked by Esplanada do Carvalhido, an area that functions as a square next to the sand. To the north, near an area known as Buddha Club, there is a more rocky stretch, referred to as Praia Azul (Blue Beach).
Characterized by an extensive stretch of light sand, Salgueira Beach offers ample space for those looking to enjoy the marine environment. Although it is a very frequented spot, especially during the bathing season, its size allows for quieter areas to be found. The central part of the sandy area has few rocks, making it particularly appealing for those seeking sea baths and leisure moments on the sand.
Salgueira Beach is recognized as a reference point for surfing in Póvoa de Varzim. Its waves are especially suitable for surfers with some experience and for bodyboarding. At high tide, conditions also become favorable for longboard. The presence of rocks in some areas and the type of swell provide a dynamic setting for water sports enthusiasts, with a left-hand 'spot' forming on the rocks in the middle of the beach.
The history of Salgueira Beach holds curiosities about past bathing habits. In the 19th century, it was known as "Praia dos Ceboleiros" (Onion Sellers' Beach), a name that refers to an unusual practice of the time, where people bathed in an unorthodox manner, wearing only a long shirt which, when wet, became transparent. This particularity led local authorities to issue a decree in 1871 prohibiting bathing in the nude, marking a relevant moment in the evolution of bathing customs in the region.
The quality and accessibility of Salgueira Beach are highlighted by the attribution of important awards. This sandy area is distinguished with the Blue Flag, an international recognition that attests to its environmental excellence, water quality, safety, and services offered. Additionally, its Accessible Beach status ensures that the location is prepared to welcome and provide a comfortable experience for all visitors, including those with reduced mobility.
