Location

Praia da Memória is located in the municipality of Matosinhos, in the coastal town of Lavra, more precisely in the Facho area. Facing the vast Atlantic Ocean, this stretch of sand is part of the coastline north of the city of Porto.

Its position offers a genuinely Atlantic atmosphere, with a constant sea breeze and an open sea landscape, conducive to moments of quietude and contemplation.

The Liberal History

This stretch of the Portuguese coast was the stage for a pivotal event in the history of Portugal. In 1832, what was then known as Praia de Arnosa de Pampelido was the chosen site for the landing of D. Pedro IV.

With a force of about 7,500 men, the monarch's purpose was to confront the troops of his brother, D. Miguel, at a crucial moment in the Liberal Wars. This landing represented a decisive step towards the establishment of the liberal regime in the country, surprising the absolutist forces who did not anticipate an attack in this northern region.

The Obelisk of Memory

To commemorate this historic landing and the victory that followed, the Obelisk of Memory was erected on the beach. This imposing monument, built of granite, serves as a lasting symbol of the event. Its first stone was laid in 1840, on the occasion of the bicentennial of the Restoration of Portuguese Independence, and its construction was completed 24 years later.

The Obelisk was classified as a national monument in 1886. At its base, limestone panels perpetuate the initiative for its construction, the names of commanders, and the proclamation of D. Pedro IV to the soldiers, making it a visual and historical landmark of the beach.

The Coastal Environment

Praia da Memória is an oceanic beach, characterized by its stretch of light-colored sand and the imposing presence of the Atlantic Ocean. Although its original dune system has been subject to adaptations over time, the beach retains its natural character, offering a space to enjoy the maritime landscape.

The site is sought after by those who enjoy bathing and water sports, being a spot where one can practice surf and volleyball, taking advantage of the coast's natural conditions for moments of leisure.

Former Names

Throughout its existence, this beach has been known by several names, reflecting the different phases of its history and local perception. Besides Praia da Memória, it was also designated as Praia de Pampelido, Praia da Arenosa and, curiously, Praia dos Ladrões.

These old designations contribute to its unique character and its historical narrative, inviting the discovery of details from the past.
