Granja Beach is located in Granja, an urbanization that is part of the locality of Arcozelo, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. Situated on the Atlantic coast, this coastal area stands out for its harmonious transition between the urban environment and the natural beauty of the coastline. Its setting offers a perspective of the beaches of Northern Portugal, with its extensive sandy stretch and characteristic rock formations.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Granja Beach was a prime summer destination for the Northern Portuguese aristocracy. The beach and its surroundings were frequented by royalty and the court, becoming a meeting point for prominent figures of Portuguese society and culture. Writers such as Eça de Queirós and Ramalho Ortigão were regular visitors, contributing to the refined atmosphere of the time. Its connection to Portuguese culture is equally strong, having been immortalized in verses by the poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, who spent her summers here.
Granja Beach is characterized by an extensive stretch of fine sand, bathed by the clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Also known as "Praia da Meia Laranja" (Half Orange Beach), its landscape varies along its length, presenting the mouth of the Ribeira da Granja (Granja Stream) and the presence of rock formations dotting the water in the northern area. The southern part of the beach, in turn, tends to be more sought after for its continuous sandy area. This place generally offers a calm environment inviting relaxation, ideal for those seeking tranquility by the sea.
The quality of Granja Beach is recognized by awards that attest to its environmental excellence, such as the Blue Flag, the Gold Flag, and the Zero Pollution status. It is also an Accessible Beach, with infrastructures that facilitate enjoyment for people with reduced mobility. The beach is accompanied by a wooden boardwalk that invites leisurely strolls along the coastline. During the summer months, bathers' safety is ensured by the presence of lifeguards.
