The square's current name, attributed in 1882, pays homage to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the Marquis of Pombal, a central political figure in 18th-century Portuguese history. Before adopting this name, the site was known as Largo da Aguardente (Brandy Square), a designation reflecting the commercial activity that developed there, specifically a market dedicated to that beverage.

The area witnessed important historical moments. During the Siege of Porto in 1832, it served as a strategic point, forming part of the liberal troops' defense lines against absolutist forces. At the time, it was one of the city's barriers, used to control and tax goods arriving in Porto. Later, in the late 19th century, it even housed a bullring, a use quite different from its present one.

Currently, Praça do Marquês de Pombal invites visitors to pause and enjoy its outdoor space. It features a romantic-style garden, notably well-treed, which provides pleasant shaded areas, especially appreciated on hot days. The space includes elements such as two basins with water features and an elegant iron bandstand, which dates back to the landscaping intervention carried out in 1898 and remains a point of reference.

In recent years, the square has been enriched with the installation of the "Fonte da Confidente" (Confidante Fountain), which contributes to the visual appeal of the site. It is a popular spot for local residents seeking moments of relaxation, socializing, and quiet outdoor activities.
