Situated in the heart of Porto's Downtown (Baixa), Praça de Carlos Alberto occupies a spot that, since ancient times, has stood out as a convergence point. It resulted from the merging of old pathways that started from Porta do Olival, orienting northwards.
Its location makes it a space for passage and gathering in the city's central urban fabric, maintaining its identity as a landmark in the surrounding area.
The history of this space dates back centuries, with its existence documented since at least 1638. In those days, it was known as Largo dos Ferradores (Farriers' Square), a name that reflected its primary function.
This was where farriers gathered, preparing horses and other mounts for journeys departing from Porto. Due to its strategic location, it also served as a meeting point for travelers and was popularly called Feira das Caixas (Box Fair), associated with the manufacturing of packaging for emigrants' goods.
The name the square bears today is a tribute to Carlos Alberto, former King of Piedmont and Sardinia. After being dethroned in 1849, following military setbacks, this monarch found refuge in the city of Porto.
The 18th-century palace located in the square, which at the time functioned as an inn, was his first residence in Porto. His stay in the city, however, was brief, as he died a few months later. In recognition and memory of this royal figure, the old Largo dos Ferradores was renamed Praça de Carlos Alberto.
At the center of Praça de Carlos Alberto, the imposing Monument to the Dead of the Great War stands tall. Inaugurated on April 9, 1928, this work by Henrique Moreira pays tribute to the Portuguese soldiers who perished in the 1914-1918 world conflict.
Its presence in the public space of the square evokes an important collective memory. It is interesting to note that this monument replaced a previous statue, which did not gain popular acceptance, leading to the commissioning and installation of the current work that has become a landmark in this location.
In addition to its historical function as a communication hub, Praça de Carlos Alberto was, for many years, an important social meeting point in the city. For example, it hosted the notable fair where employment contracts between servants and masters were arranged, a moment that attracted people of diverse origins to this location.
More recently, the space underwent significant urban interventions, but its surface configuration was kept close to the original, preserving the garden areas and the traditional cobblestone paving. This contributes to the current ambiance of the square, which continues to be a thoroughfare and a place for a break in the dynamic of the Baixa.
