Solar dos Carneiros is an old manor house, located in Póvoa de Varzim, built in the 17th century.
The building was the residence of the Viscount of Azevedo, a historically relevant figure in the region.
It is located in a central area of the city, on Rua do Visconde and Rua da Amadinha, easy to find for those exploring Póvoa de Varzim.
Since 1937, the Solar has housed the Municipal Museum, one of the oldest ethnographic museums in Portugal, with a strong connection to the city's maritime and cultural heritage.
The collection of "Siglas Poveiras" is one of the main attractions of the museum, an important symbol of the local maritime culture, internationally recognized with the "European Museum of The Year Award" in 1980.
The museum also exhibits sacred art, pieces of ceramics and earthenware (from the 16th to the 19th centuries), as well as archaeological objects, including Roman inscriptions from Beiriz.
Solar dos Carneiros was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1986, reinforcing its importance in the national heritage.
The museum is associated with two nearby museum centers: the São Pedro de Rates Center, which explores the art and history surrounding the Romanesque Church of Rates, and the Cividade de Terroso Center, which offers a view of the archaeology of the Cividade de Terroso.
