Located in Póvoa de Varzim, in the parish of Póvoa de Varzim, Beiriz and Argivai.
The church was built in the 18th century on the site of an old hermitage dedicated to the Lord of the Mount. The change of devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows happened in 1768, when the placement of her image in the hermitage was authorized.
The church has six chapels, each with sculptures representing the sorrows of Our Lady. The seventh sorrow is represented on the main altar.
In 1974, the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows was classified as a Property of Public Interest, highlighting its historical and cultural value.
The temple is known for its harmonious ornamentation and paintings. The church tower is elegant and visible from a long distance, serving as a reference for navigators.
A curious event occurred in 1784, when the image of Our Lady of Sorrows was taken in procession to ask for rain and ensure good harvests.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the church became an important center of Marian devotion, especially under the guidance of Fr. José Cascão.
