Located in the city of Póvoa de Varzim, in the district of Porto, the Fortress of Póvoa de Varzim (or Fortress of Our Lady of Conception) is a historical and cultural landmark.
The fortress was built in the 17th century to defend the port and the population of Póvoa de Varzim from attacks by pirates and corsairs. Since 1960, it has been considered a Property of Public Interest.
There are records of a smaller fort on the site, possibly built in the 1400s to protect local maritime activities, including fishing and commerce.
The fortification as we know it was started in 1701 and completed in 1740. Its construction was led by the military engineer Sebastião de Souza, and it was Governor D. Diogo de Sousa who promoted the completion of the work, which had great strategic value.
With a quadrangular design, the fortress has four bastions, two facing the sea and two facing land, protected by thick walls. Inside, there is a baroque chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Conception, built in 1743, with details in gilded wood carvings and a unique altar.
Annually, from December 7th to 8th, the traditional procession in honor of Our Lady of Conception takes place, starting at the fortress and going through the city.
Since 2015, after a restoration promoted by the City Council, the fortress has gained a new life as a leisure space, with bars and restaurants, preserving the original structure. Today, it is a popular meeting place, especially for those who appreciate the sea view and local history.
