Quinta de Bonjóia is located in the eastern part of the city of Porto, in the urban area that gave it its name. Its layout offers a privileged view over the Campanhã Valley, with the Douro river as a backdrop, providing a peaceful environment with a wide perspective on the surrounding landscape.
This place has a rich history, dating back centuries, having belonged to various families and institutions. However, it was its acquisition by D. Lourenço Amorim da Gama Lobo, a knight-fidalgo of the Royal Household, in 1758, that marked the beginning of the construction of the imposing mansion. Built from 1759 onwards, the project is traditionally attributed to Nicolau Nasoni, the architect who contributed so much to the physiognomy of Porto, or to one of his disciples. Interestingly, the building was never completed, as can be seen by the absence of one of its sections. In 1995, the property became part of the Porto municipality, opening itself to the city.
The Quinta de Bonjóia mansion, even in its incomplete form, is a significant example of 18th-century architecture. Its south facade stands out for its imposing presence, crowned by a quadrangular tower at one end. The windows and doors reveal the elegance of the rocaille taste of the era, and a small exterior staircase invites one to appreciate the intricate details. At the entrance to the property, on Rua de Bonjóia, a gate displays the coat of arms of D. Lourenço Amorim da Gama Lobo, marking his connection to the founder of the house. This heritage is classified as a Monument of Public Interest.
With a vast area, Quinta de Bonjóia is an invitation to stroll and enjoy nature. The formally designed gardens extend from the main gate to the mansion, embellished by camellias that add color and life to the space. As one proceeds, the gardens develop on different levels, creating diverse nooks and a sense of spaciousness. The combination of landscaped areas with wooded zones offers a relaxing environment, ideal for a peaceful break in the heart of the city.
