Located in the Serralves area of Porto, the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art is set within a unique landscape. Its location allows for a constant connection with its surrounding natural environment, offering a special context for a cultural visit.
The building that houses the Museum of Contemporary Art is a work by the renowned Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. Its design prioritizes integration with the natural surroundings, making use of light and creating a continuous relationship between the interior spaces and the exterior landscape. The structure, with modern lines and varied volumes, includes areas specifically designed for art exhibitions, but also hosts spaces such as an auditorium and a library.
The architectural concept allows for the creation of multiple pathways and offers different perspectives, both on the exhibited works and on the architecture itself and the landscape context in which it is situated. Access to the Museum is marked by a courtyard that welcomes visitors, introducing the experience of the space.
The Serralves Museum's collection focuses on contemporary art, bringing together a significant body of works created from the late 1960s to the present day. The permanent collection features a diverse range of artists, both Portuguese and international. Works by names such as Helena Almeida, Paula Rego, Andy Warhol, and Joan Miró are represented, providing an overview of the artistic production of the period.
In addition to its permanent collection, the Museum regularly presents temporary exhibitions, allowing visitors to discover different facets of contemporary art and varied artistic approaches. The institution is dedicated to promoting understanding and contact with art, through programs that encourage engagement and dialogue between the public and artistic manifestations.
There is a project for the expansion of the Museum building, also designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira. This expansion aims to increase exhibition capacity and create new areas to house and develop its collection and archives, anticipating the future growth of the institution's collection and activities.
