This imposing monument majestically rises in the center of Praça de Mouzinho de Albuquerque, better known as Rotunda da Boavista, in the heart of the city of Porto. Its central position, set within a spacious landscaped area, makes it stand out in the urban landscape, visible from the various avenues that converge towards the square. The surrounding area is one of the city's busiest, offering a dynamic perspective of Porto's constantly moving daily life.
The Monument to the Heroes of the Peninsular War was conceived to honor the courage and sacrifice of those who, between 1808 and 1814, defended the territory during the French invasions, a historical period known as the Peninsular War. This conflict united Portuguese and British forces against Napoleon Bonaparte's troops. The work represents an enduring testament to resistance and victory, marking one of the most decisive episodes in Portugal's history.
With a remarkable height of 45 meters, the monument's main structure is an imposing granite obelisk. At its base, various bronze sculptural groups visually narrate the events of the era. One can observe representations of artillery in action, the participation of British soldiers, and the involvement of common people in the struggles. One of the sculptural groups depicts the tragic "Ponte das Barcas" (Bridge of Boats). At the top, the monument is crowned by a lion, symbolizing British strength, dominating an eagle, representing the Napoleonic empire, in a clear allusion to the allies' victory. Symbolic figures, such as a woman personifying Victory, wielding the national flag and a sword, underscore the presence and role of women in the resistance.
The monument's design, awarded in 1907, was initially conceived by architect José Marques da Silva and sculptor António Alves de Sousa. Its construction proved to be a long and complex process, spanning over four decades, with work beginning in 1914 and official inauguration only in 1952. Several interruptions and challenges marked its construction journey. Following Alves de Sousa's passing, the work was completed under the direction of other renowned sculptors, Henrique Moreira and Sousa Caldas. This long gestation reflects the ambition and perseverance in materializing such a significant tribute for the city and the country.
