The Monument to Infante Dom Henrique stands imposingly in one of the most emblematic squares of the city of Porto, in the heart of its Historic Centre. It is located in the square that shares the Infante's name, a central and vibrant space, easily accessible to anyone exploring the city's oldest area. Its presence contributes to the historical atmosphere of the area, inviting a moment of contemplation.
This sculptural work pays tribute to one of the most significant figures in Portuguese history: Infante Dom Henrique. Born in Porto in 1394, the Infante was the great driving force behind the epic Portuguese Maritime Discoveries, laying the foundations for the exploration of new worlds and the advancement of geographical knowledge. The monument was conceived on the occasion of the fifth centenary of his birth, serving as a lasting homage from his native city to his legacy.
Created by the sculptor Tomás Costa, the monument is a symbolic representation of the spirit of the Age of Discoveries. The central figure of Infante Dom Henrique is shown commanding the fleets, personifying the leadership and vision that characterized him. By his side, a female figure, embodying Victory, holds the Portuguese flag, symbolizing the successes and glory achieved in the great navigations. At the base of the monument, there is an inscription that proclaims: "To Infante D. Henrique / initiator of the Portuguese discoveries / Porto / his homeland / dedicates," reinforcing the intrinsic link between the Infante and the city where he was born.
The erection of this monument was not without artistic debates, reflecting the importance and significance that the homage to Infante Dom Henrique held for the time. Despite discussions surrounding its design, its construction advanced, and the first stone was laid on March 4, 1894, by King Dom Carlos. The same monarch presided over the official inauguration of the monument on October 20, 1900, sealing the lasting presence of this notable piece in Porto's urban landscape and collective memory.
