The Corujeira Garden is located in the heart of Corujeira, an area integrated into the parish of Campanhã, in the city of Porto. This green space is a central and recognizable point in a densely populated area, marking one of the city's historic urban nodes. Its position in the old Corujeira Square gives it a prominent role in the surrounding urban structure, functioning as an important green lung in an area of continuous movement.
Throughout the centuries, the Corujeira area was a place of great dynamism. Before becoming the garden we know today, this square was the stage for important fairs and markets, namely the cattle and 'moços' fair, which animated local and regional life. At the end of the 20th century, the space underwent a profound revitalization. What was once a bustling area of commerce and gathering was transformed into a municipal garden, designed for the leisure and tranquility of residents and visitors, demonstrating a change in how public space is enjoyed in the city.
Currently, the Corujeira Garden stands out as a refuge of serenity amidst the urban environment. It is characterized by the presence of leafy plane trees, mature trees that offer generous shade, especially appreciated on warmer days. Its configuration invites a moment of rest, allowing a pause from the daily hustle and bustle. It is a place that provides a calm environment and contact with nature, essential for urban quality of life and for those seeking a moment of quietude.
The name "Corujeira" has historical and cultural roots connected to the very identity of the place. It refers, first of all, to the presence of owls, nocturnal birds that might have been common in the area. However, the term "corujeira" or "corujeiro" also has an older, more descriptive meaning, alluding to a modest-sized settlement located on terrain that could be considered irregular or difficult to access. This duality in the origin of the name reflects the evolution of the place, from perhaps a more rugged and rural area to the urbanized and gardened space it is today.
