Currently, it resides in the Jardim do Barão de Nova Sintra, a green space that offers a tranquil refuge amidst the urban sprawl. A Granite Heritage

This granite-built fountain features a simple design, yet with details that tell its story. It consists of a single spout that directs water into a semicircular basin, positioned close to ground level. Above the inscription area, a bas-relief medallion stands out, displaying the coat of arms of the city of Porto that was in use until 1832. This decorative element offers a glimpse into the past and the identity of Porto.

The History of Water and the Site

Originally also known as Fonte do Ribeirinho (Streamlet Fountain), the Ablative Fountain played an essential role in the daily life of Porto. It was built to address a public hygiene and supply problem, collecting waters that previously flowed disorderly and dirty through the streets and along the banks of a stream, creating puddles that hindered passage. With its construction, the waters were then channeled to this point, transforming a previously inconvenient and unsanitary area into a more pleasant and functional place, providing clean water to those who needed it.

The Name and the Inscription

The name "Ablative Fountain" has a peculiar and culturally rich origin. It is due to the presence of an extensive Latin inscription engraved on its body, which contains multiple ablative cases. This inscription is an eloquent testament to its original function and the impact it had on the lives of the inhabitants at the time. Its message, translated, describes how the waters, previously dirty and unutilized, were collected to make the place more beautiful and convenient, quenching the thirst of those who lived or passed through there.
