The Hulsenbos Fountain is located in the historic area of Miragaia, a picturesque district in the heart of Porto, integrated into the parish that covers part of the Douro River's bank. It is specifically situated in Largo Artur Arcos, an open space paved with granite setts, offering benches for rest. Its position allows for a direct visual connection with the Douro River, contributing to the relaxed atmosphere of the riverside promenade.

Architecture and Materials

Dated 1907, the Hulsenbos Fountain exhibits a neoclassical composition, notable for its symmetry and simple geometric forms. The central structure is quadrangular, resting on a robust base. At its corners, pilasters decorated with volutes stand out. The top of the fountain is crowned by a shape evoking an inverted chalice, ornamented with fluting and concave and convex elements. Water, flowing from four brass spouts, is collected in two granite basins with rounded edges, arranged at different levels: an upper, partially semi-circular one, and a lower, rectangular one, originally designed for animal use. The predominant materials are granite, marble present in the plaques, and iron, which incorporates supports for vessels.

A Legacy of Compassion

Beyond its formal beauty, the Hulsenbos Fountain is a monument with strong symbolic significance. It was offered to the Animal Protection Society by D. Alice Hulsenbos, in memory of her father, Councilor Henrique Hulsenbos. This altruistic origin is engraved on the four marble plaques that adorn the fountain, each with a unique inscription. The message on the South side pays homage to its promoters, while the others highlight the importance of kindness and respect for animals, and everyone's responsibility in their preservation. These words transform the fountain into a place for reflection on the relationship between humans and animals.

Atmosphere and Contemplation

Currently, the fountain serves an ornamental and cultural function, being a point of interest that invites rest and contemplation. Located in a tranquil square, with granite benches, it is an invitation to pause and appreciate the urban surroundings and the Douro. Its presence enriches the landscape of Miragaia, offering a small oasis of calm and a testament to the history and values that have shaped the city over time.
