A Look at History

The imposing building we know today as Conde de Ferreira has its origin in the philanthropic vision of Joaquim Ferreira dos Santos, a highly prominent figure in 19th-century Porto, bestowed with the title of Count. Born on the outskirts of the city, he amassed a considerable fortune through commercial activities in Brazil, which, in his time, included the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved people. However, it was his return to Portugal and his remarkable spirit of benevolence that marked the final phase of his public life. It was through his will that he bequeathed funds for a series of social works, among which the construction of this hospital stands out. Inaugurated in 1883, it represented a landmark, being the first purpose-built unit in Portugal dedicated to psychiatry, reflecting an innovative approach to mental health treatment at the time.

Architecture and Artistic Elements

The architecture of the Conde de Ferreira complex demonstrates a grandeur and harmony characteristic of its initial conception. It is a vast building, composed of various wings and pavilions, whose main facade is distinguished by simple lines, yet with a notable presence. In the front gardens, one can admire a Carrara marble statue of Conde de Ferreira himself, a remarkable work by the sculptor António Soares dos Reis.
