The Arca do Anjo is currently situated in a serene and green area, integrated into the gardens of the Municipal Water and Sanitation Services (SMAS) of Porto, in the zone known as Nova Sintra Reservoirs. This location, slightly set apart from the city's central bustle, offers a more tranquil environment and invites calm observation of this historical piece. Its current position provides an interesting contrast with its original purpose, now in a context more of contemplation than of active water distribution.

A Water Legacy

Inaugurated in 1893 to replace the old Chafariz do Anjo (Angel Fountain), this structure was designed as an 'arca' (arch/cistern), meaning a water collection and distribution system, and not merely as a decorative element. The Arca do Anjo played a fundamental role in Porto's water supply infrastructure of the time, being responsible for feeding various other fountains and public spouts scattered throughout the city. Originally, it was located in Praça de Lisboa, in the area where the extinct Mercado do Anjo (Angel Market) was situated, giving it a direct connection to the daily life and commerce of Porto back then. Its subsequent relocation safeguarded this important testimony to the city's history.

Stone and Tile Details

The Arca do Anjo is constructed from robust granite, a material characteristic of the region's architecture, giving it a solid and durable presence. Inside, its design is notable for its functionality and beauty. There are two main tanks, covered with decorative tiles that display geometric and vegetal motifs, adding an artistic touch to its utility. Water flows from a main spout into a small tank, from which, in turn, fourteen smaller spouts discharge water into a larger tank. This ingenious system demonstrates not only the technical expertise of the era but also an aesthetic concern in the design of essential public infrastructures.
