On the banks of the Douro River, in the Ribeira area, in the heart of Porto, stand two imposing granite pillars that mark the former location of the Dona Maria II Suspension Bridge. It is situated in a vibrant riverside area, where the presence of the river defines the landscape. Its remnants are integrated into the city's urban dynamic, offering a point of interest for those exploring this waterfront.
Currently, what can be observed at the site are the two robust stone pillars that once supported this structure. These massive granite blocks are all that remains of the original bridge. In their vicinity, it is still possible to identify the remnants of the military guardhouse, a construction that complemented the infrastructure and played a fundamental role in its daily operation.
Inaugurated in 1843, the Dona Maria II Suspension Bridge represented a remarkable feat of engineering for its time, being the first suspension bridge built in Portugal. It was named in honor of Queen Dona Maria II of Portugal. Its design was by the French engineer Stanislas Bigot, who conceived a structure resting on stone pillars, with the deck supported by iron cables that spanned the Douro River. For 44 years, this bridge played an essential role in connecting the banks, replacing the previous Ponte das Barcas and significantly facilitating circulation and trade in the region. In 1887, its function ceased with the construction of a new crossing that made its presence obsolete, leading to its dismantling.
The pillars and the ruins of the military guardhouse are more than mere remnants; they are a testament to the history of Douro crossings in Porto. The guardhouse, in particular, was the place where access to the bridge was regulated and tolls were collected, crucial elements for the maintenance and management of the infrastructure. These remnants invite reflection on the city's urban and technological evolution, reminding us of the importance this bridge held in the daily lives of its inhabitants and in the connection between the two banks of the river.
