Ponte do Carro is located in the town of Santa Cruz do Bispo, within the São Brás area, in the municipality of Matosinhos. This bridge is nestled in a natural valley, shaped by the Leça River, and characterized by an environment with slopes and diverse vegetation. Exploring the surrounding area, visitors will discover walking paths that follow the river's course, offering glimpses of the riverside landscape. On the opposite bank of the valley, the landscape is crossed by a railway line, which rises above the terrain, creating an interesting contrast between the natural and the built.

Medieval Legacy

Ponte do Carro is a remarkable example of public civil architecture dating back to the Middle Ages, specifically the 12th and 13th centuries. Erected over the Leça River, this structure is distinctive for its perfect arch, a constructive feature that illustrates the skill of the era. Its construction in granite masonry, with irregularly shaped stones, gives it an authenticity and robustness that withstand the test of time. Its historical and architectural value is recognized, having been classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1971, which underscores its importance in the national heritage.

On the banks of the Leça River, a diversity of flora can be observed, including different species of oaks, plane trees, orange trees, and elder trees, which form part of the so-called Leça Green Corridor.
