This unique rocky outcrop is located in the village of Travanca do Monte, belonging to the municipality of Amarante, set within the natural landscape of the Serra da Aboboreira. The boulder sits on the northern edge of the locality and, on days with good visibility, offers a wide perspective of the majestic Serra do Marão, which becomes particularly impressive when covered by winter snow.
The Penedo dos Cornudos is a voluminous granite rock that stands out in the rural landscape of Travanca do Monte. Its peculiar name derives from an ancient popular belief, passed down by the oldest inhabitants of the village, which associates the stone with a means of ascertaining conjugal fidelity. It is not a common attraction, but rather a point of interest that invites reflection on local traditions and folklore, which remain alive in collective memory.
Stories say that, to discover the "truth" about fidelity, specific rituals were practiced near the boulder. One version indicates that, to ensure the fidelity of one's partner, a man should observe the rock from top to bottom and throw a small stone at it. However, the best-known and most curious version, intended to ascertain possible infidelity, involved throwing a small stone onto the top of the boulder. If the stone remained, it would mean the partner was faithful. If it fell, each fall would represent an instance of infidelity. The presence of several small stones on the boulder suggests that, despite the passage of time, this tradition is maintained in some way.
The Penedo dos Cornudos falls into the category of so-called "rocking stones" or "bolideiras," rock formations where a large stone is balanced on another. These structures, common in granite areas of Northern and Central Portugal, were often associated with mystical beliefs, where their movement (or lack thereof) was interpreted as a harbinger of the future or an oracle. Although the Penedo dos Cornudos is too heavy to move easily, the legend associated with checking fidelity may have its roots in these ancient beliefs about rocks with divinatory powers. Its existence highlights the richness of intangible heritage and popular narratives that shape local identity.
