The Dr. Fernando Melo Urban Park is situated in the urban area of Gandra, in the locality of Ermesinde, which is part of the municipality of Valongo. This green space occupies a significant portion of a city block within the urban fabric, bordered by streets and the railway line, proving to be a meeting point and a place of serenity amidst the town's dynamics.
This park is the result of a remarkable transformation of a former industrial hub. In the early 20th century, the site was occupied by the Empresa Industrial de Ermesinde, a ceramic factory dedicated to the production of tiles, bricks, and later, a wide range of ceramic products, from pipes to sanitary ware. Over the decades, the factory evolved and expanded its operations, becoming a landmark in local industry. In 1995, the industrial complex, already in an advanced state of degradation, was acquired by the Valongo City Council. Following conservation and adaptation works, the old buildings were converted, and in 2001, the current complex was inaugurated, preserving the memory of its industrial heritage while offering a new cultural and recreational purpose to the community.
Dr. Fernando Melo Urban Park offers a variety of environments for its visitors. It emphasizes nature, with an extensively wooded area that invites leisurely strolls. At its center, a tranquil lake with a sculpture adds a scenic touch and a point of contemplation. In addition to the natural environment, the park provides structures that promote social interaction and activity. An outdoor amphitheater hosts various events and shows, creating cultural dynamism in the heart of the green space. Families with children will find a dedicated playground. Additionally, for those seeking a more informal activity, there is a mini-golf course.
