Located in Milheirós, in the municipality of Maia, the Alvura River Park is situated on the left bank of the Leça River, next to the Alvura Bridge. Its surroundings combine forest and agricultural areas, offering a more serene and less urbanized environment close to the river. The presence of weirs, vestiges of old mills, creates interesting diversity in the depth of the river water in this stretch, which contributes to the natural richness of the place.
This park was designed as a model for urban adaptation to climate change and a "living laboratory" of nature-based solutions. Its design actively contributes to the sustainable management of the water cycle, with mechanisms that allow for the capture and infiltration of rainwater in the surrounding area, before it reaches the Leça River. This approach helps to prevent rapid flooding and filter pollutants that could run off from the streets, protecting the river water quality. Furthermore, the park was planned to respect the natural flood plain, keeping it free of obstacles in case of rising waters.
The Alvura River Park area is recognized for its remarkable biodiversity richness, standing out as one of the most diverse locations along the Leça River in Maia. Following the removal of invasive plants in 2016, native plant species typical of riparian habitats were planted, creating a natural refuge and facilitating the increase of local fauna. It is possible to observe around 47 species of birds, including birds that depend on the abundance of fish in the river, such as the cormorant, the great egret, and the kingfisher. During spring and summer, it is common to spot wild ducks and moorhens with their young along the banks.
The Alvura River Park integrates elements designed for visitor comfort, aligned with sustainability principles. Lighting is provided by luminaires that use energy captured from wind and sun, underscoring the ecological commitment of the space. For visitors, wireless internet is also available, allowing for continuous connectivity. This is a suitable place for quiet walks and for enjoying moments of conviviality in direct contact with nature.
