The Amarante Forest Park is located in the heart of the city, occupying a vast area that overlooks the Tâmega River. This green space, spanning over five hectares, is situated in the parish of Cepelos, within the Boavista Urbanization.
Its central position gives it a significant role in Amarante's urban landscape, offering direct contact with nature within the locality.
The creation of this park dates back to 1916, initiated by António do Lago Cerqueira, a prominent figure in Amarante's history. The initial project's primary purpose was the reforestation of the Marão and Meia Via mountains, for which thousands of trees were supplied from the park's own nurseries.
Its importance for forest recovery has endured over time. The park played a crucial role after the 1985 fire in the Serra do Marão, when its nurseries once again contributed a large number of trees for landscape renewal.
The Amarante Forest Park is notable for its rich and varied collection of plant species. Among the diverse flora that can be observed, specimens of sequoias, lindens, plane trees, and maples stand out.
The presence of the Ginkgo deserves special mention, a species recognized as one of the oldest trees in the world. In addition to flora, the park is home to various fauna species, such as partridges and jackdaws, which contribute to the vitality and natural balance of the local ecosystem.
This park is a widely sought-after location for leisure time and the practice of various outdoor activities. Its extensive green areas and paths invite walking tours, providing a tranquil environment to enjoy nature.
It is an inviting space for sports, particularly for hiking, and is especially popular during the summer months when it offers a cool and pleasant refuge for those seeking outdoor contact.
