The Parque do Solar dos Condes de Resende is located in Canelas, a locality belonging to the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. Situated in surroundings that combine residential tranquility with proximity to more bustling areas, this place offers a refuge of history and serenity within the urban fabric.
This park is an integral part of an old Baroque-style manorial estate, whose history dates back to the 17th century. Over the centuries, the manor house and its grounds were home to several influential families, such as the Baldaia and the Viscounts of Beire, before passing into the possession of the Condes de Resende (Counts of Resende) in the late 19th century. The history of the place is particularly enriched by its association with notable figures, such as the writer Eça de Queirós, who was a close friend of the 5th and 6th Counts of Resende and used to spend seasons at this manor, especially during the summer, conferring undeniable cultural and literary value upon it.
The Parque do Solar dos Condes de Resende provides a space of serenity and contemplation, where visitors can stroll and appreciate the atmosphere surrounding this historic building. It is a place that invites the discovery of its heritage and cultural dimension. Currently, the Manor plays a relevant role as a local heritage research center, housing archaeological findings from excavations in the region, as well as the Marciano Azuaga Collection, a 19th-century collection that was the city's first museum. This ensemble enhances the importance of the place, not only for its natural beauty but also for its active role in preserving and disseminating the history and culture of the region.
