The Ribeiro do Matadouro Park is located in Santo Tirso, within the urban area of Areal. It is strategically situated in the central part of the city, along the valley of the Ribeiro do Matadouro. This particular position grants it a natural retreat atmosphere, even while being in the heart of the urban cluster, functioning as an important green area within the city's context.
This green space originated from the intention to environmentally regenerate an area that previously corresponded to "Quinta do Tapado," an old agricultural unit. Its creation's main objective was to transform an area with significant landscape potential into an accessible natural environment. The park integrates into the city's ecological structure, offering a green lung that promotes nature interpretation and raises awareness for good environmental practices.
The design of Ribeiro do Matadouro Park is recognized for its quality, having been conceived to reveal the site's identity and foster interaction with natural elements. Special care was taken in preserving pre-existing arboreal vegetation, such as willows and alders, and in introducing new species to enrich biodiversity. The project included the creation of small temporary ponds, which fill according to ground humidity, contributing to specific ecosystems and associated flora, such as reeds and marsh irises. The materials chosen for the park's construction are adapted to local conditions, contributing to sustainability and integration into the landscape.
The park was designed to stimulate different forms of recreation, both active and passive. It features a network of well-defined paths, including pedestrian walkways and a cycling path. These routes are designed to allow for different paces of exploration and perception of the space. Some passages are elevated platforms made of treated wood, which harmonize with the natural environment and ensure soil permeability. Pavement signage guides visitors, indicating different movement speeds in a playful manner.
One of the park's distinctive features is the presence of interpretive sculptures. These elements, inspired by the art of origami, are part of the municipality's "Sculpture Route" and serve a dual function: they are artistic pieces that beautify the landscape and, at the same time, integrate essential urban furniture. They allow visitors to sit and enjoy the environment, blending art with functionality in a unique and inviting way.
