Located in the Nova Sintra area, in the city of Porto, this park occupies an elevated position, offering views over the Douro River. It is possible to see the Gaia bank, including the Areinho beach area.
Its location allows for a more tranquil environment, away from the intense pace of the city centre, while remaining, however, easily accessible.
The history of this space dates back to the 19th century, when it was a private estate. In 1867, it was acquired by José Joaquim Leite Guimarães, who would become the Baron of Nova Sintra, giving the place its name.
After belonging to other owners, the property was purchased by the Porto City Council in 1932 with the purpose of installing the city's water supply services there, a function that still remains today. The park, as a significant green area of this old estate, was gradually opened and adapted for public enjoyment.
One of the most unique aspects of Nova Sintra Park is its impressive collection of fountains, spouts, and water chests. These pieces came from various parts of the city of Porto over the decades, creating a kind of open-air museum dedicated to the public water heritage of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.
Walking through the park allows one to discover the diversity of these elements, each with its own history and architectural style, transporting the visitor to different eras of the city and illustrating the evolution of water supply systems.
With a vast green area, the park presents different environments to explore. It includes more formal flowerbed areas, contrasting with wooded areas and secluded spots that invite a tranquil and more intimate stroll.
The vegetation is varied, with emphasis on various tree species, some rare, and the presence of magnolias and camellias that dot the paths with their flowers. The atmosphere is remarkably calm and serene, offering a welcome break from the city's pace, ideal for a moment of relaxation or reading.
