Location

Parque das Varas is located in Custóias, in the municipality of Matosinhos. It is situated in an urban area of the same name, positioned behind the Monastery of Leça do Balio and overlooking the Leça River valley.

Conception and Structure

This green space extends over a considerable area, developing on two distinct levels that follow the river valley. The upper platform is dominated by a vast lawn area and includes a water mirror, an element that reflects the light and surrounding environment. A pedestrian corridor traverses the park along its entire length, facilitating the exploration of its different zones.

Botanical Diversity

The flora of Parque das Varas is quite varied, contributing to an enriching natural environment. On the upper platform, areas with different tree species stand out, such as orange trees, oaks, black poplars, and lime trees. The wall delimiting the park features vines and wisterias, offering a picturesque setting. Shrubs such as Laurustinus and rosemary are also found.

On the lower platform, next to the river, access is via an alignment of black poplars, and the pedestrian corridor is flanked by a lawn area and trees such as sweetgum, elm, lime, and birch. In the northern part of the park, flower beds with gazanias and aptenias add color. The banks of the Leça River are naturally populated by alders, willows, ash trees, and oaks, among other riparian species.

Atmosphere and View

The park offers a tranquil environment, a space for enjoying nature and relaxing walks. Its layout on different levels allows for appreciating various perspectives of the Leça River valley. From the northern area of the park, it is possible to observe the historic cultivation fields that belonged to the Monastery, including a vegetable garden and various fruit trees, elements that enrich the surrounding landscape. The view also extends over the agricultural fields on the right bank of the river, revealing a rural panorama that contrasts with the urban proximity.
