The Asprela Park is located in the Porto area that hosts the large university hub of Asprela. Its strategic position allows it to function as a green link, connecting educational and research institutions with nearby residential areas, offering a natural escape in the daily life of the city.
With an area of approximately six hectares, Asprela Park constitutes a vast outdoor space in Porto. This project was designed to integrate nature into the urban area, offering an environment of tranquility and fresh air, accessible to the community for moments of leisure and contact with greenery.
The park is an example of the richness of local flora, hosting over 1600 trees. Among these, about 900 are new plantings that complement the more than 700 arboreal specimens that were preserved. It is possible to observe a variety of species, including cedars, liquidambars, and magnolias. The landscape design has harmoniously integrated wetland areas, resulting from the recovery of the Manga and Asprela streams, and drier areas, fostering an environment conducive to local biodiversity.
One of the distinctive aspects of Asprela Park is its innovative approach to water management. The project was designed to restore and enhance the natural hydrological cycle, incorporating elements such as retention basins, rain gardens, and permeable surfaces that promote water infiltration into the soil. This environmental strategy, which allows the park to function as a large rainwater control basin, contributes to the resilience of the urban ecosystem and the creation of a cooler and more pleasant microclimate, especially during the warmer months.
Asprela Park offers an extensive network of paths, with over two kilometers of trails designed for both pedestrians and cyclists. These trails invite exploration, exercise, or simply a relaxing walk, punctuated by strategically placed rest areas. The concern for inclusion is evident, as the park was designed to be fully accessible to people with reduced mobility, ensuring that everyone can enjoy its surrounding landscape.
