Maia Central Park is located in the urban area of Barreiros, in the heart of Maia City. Bounded by Rua Simão Bolívar and Rua Padre António, this green space of approximately 8000 m² harmoniously integrates into the central urban fabric of the municipality. Its location facilitates access to various city amenities, offering a natural refuge within the urban environment.
The land where Maia Central Park now stands was once a small "forest core," serving as a Municipal Nursery and characterized by the presence of eucalyptus and oak trees. The transformation of this site was due to the increasing population density of Maia City and the need to create a new central hub. The park's project, conceived by architect Alfredo Ascensão, with the co-authorship of Laura Tavares and André Santos, is part of a broader urban regeneration plan, aiming for perfect aesthetic integration and continuity with the surrounding space.
With an area of approximately 8000 m², the park is organized into three distinct zones, each with its own character. One of the most notable areas, near the Fórum da Maia station, features a vast lawn punctuated by stone pines. In the southern zone, a barrier of poplars provides a pleasant visual setting. This section also includes lakes with constantly recirculating water and a small elevation adorned with birch trees. Also noteworthy is a large magnolia soulangeana, recognized for its beautiful white flowers.
To the northwest, a second area hosts a modern playground, with original structures that invite children to play and have fun. This space is surrounded by a flat lawn, where poplars, oak trees, and olive trees can be observed. The third zone, which follows the metro line, is characterized by birch trees, poplars, and bamboos, and by a lake with fish and water lilies. This area culminates in a sculpture, Homage to Mothers, complemented by purple-flowering lantana montevidensis vegetation, which beautifies the environment. Benches are distributed throughout the park, inviting rest and contemplation of the landscape.
In addition to its function as a green and leisure space, Maia Central Park also plays an important role in the city's cultural life. The park's walls display street art murals, a result of the Maia Art Biennial, transforming the space into an open-air artistic expression venue. Annually, the park's gardens host events such as the "Jazz in the Park" festival, which features young talents and musical improvisation projects, enriching the cultural offerings and creating a vibrant atmosphere for visitors.
