Located in the town of Avintes, municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, the Biological Park occupies a considerable area in the Febros River Valley. This area, although close to urban centers, maintains characteristics of natural landscape and traditional agriculture.
Its geographical position, in an area that functions as a transition between built and rural environments, allows for the preservation of an important stronghold of biodiversity and heritage that once dominated the municipality.
The park is a sanctuary for a wide variety of fauna and flora representative of the region. It serves as a refuge for hundreds of species of wild animals, being an important place for bird watching for those that nest here or use the space during their migratory routes.
There is also dedicated work for the recovery of injured or rescued wild animals, which are treated in the park. The flora is equally valued, with a nursery that produces thousands of native plant species, contributing to the botanical richness of the space and the preservation of local ecosystems.
In addition to its natural component, the Gaia Biological Park functions as a living museum of the region's traditional rural landscape. Along its paths, visitors can observe elements that tell the story of rural life.
Structures such as water mills, restored rural houses, threshing floors, and granaries are integrated into the landscape, testifying to the agricultural uses and customs of bygone eras and showing the relationship between the population and their natural environment.
Exploring the park invites a tranquil stroll through nature and heritage. A well-defined pedestrian path winds through different habitats, animal observation areas, and points of historical-rural interest.
This circuit, approximately three kilometers long, is equipped with signage and information panels that help identify plant and animal species, as well as understand the ecosystems and history of the place, making the visit an educational and relaxing experience.
