Location

The Parish of Peroselo is located in the town of Perozelo, integrated into the municipality of Penafiel. The church is situated on a slightly elevated point, on an artificial platform, which forms a churchyard. In this outdoor space, a granite cross can be observed, a traditional element of the Portuguese religious landscape. To the east, at the back of the building, there is a small landscaped square that includes a bandstand, contributing to the serene atmosphere of the urban surroundings where it is located, surrounded by dwellings.

Architecture and History

The church, dedicated to Our Lady of the Visitation, has its earliest origins in the 16th century, although its current form reflects a succession of interventions throughout the 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Of rectangular plan, the edifice comprises a nave, the chancel, a side chapel to the left, and the sacristy. The bell tower, one of its most distinctive elements, rises on the left side of the main facade, which stands out with a straight lintel portal topped by a window. On the ashlar above the portal, a biblical inscription with the date 1875 marks one of the significant reforms the temple underwent.

Artistic Details of the Interior

Upon entering the church, visitors are greeted by an interior with white walls. Here, the ashlars of the side walls are covered with polychrome patterned tiles, believed to be of a singular type, not found in other similar constructions. The coverings in false barrel vaults add depth to the space, with the nave's made of wood and the chancel's displaying a 19th-century painting depicting the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Near the entrance, on the right side, is the baptismal font, a 16th-century stonework piece, with its faceted column, which serves as a testament to the site's antiquity.

Chapels and Altarpieces

The temple is enriched by several chapels and altarpieces that warrant close observation. Of particular note is the side chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception, on the Gospel side. This deeply recessed chapel is accessible through a round arch ornamented with carving, and its interior dazzles with its profuse gilded carving, in the National Style, which lines the coffered ceiling, decorated with acanthus and cherubs. In the triumphal arch, which marks the transition to the chancel, the collateral altarpieces are arranged. The main altarpiece, in turn, is a remarkable piece of late Baroque carving, painted to imitate marble and enriched with gilded elements. On the rear facade, visible from the exterior, a 1970 tile panel illustrates the image of Our Lady of the Conception.
