The Parish of Nossa Senhora da Hora is located in the vibrant town of Senhora da Hora, within the municipality of Matosinhos. This location, situated in the Carriçal urbanization, is at the heart of an area that has developed significantly over the years, remaining a central and dynamic point in the urban landscape.
The history of the Parish of Nossa Senhora da Hora has deep roots, dating back to 1514, with the construction of a chapel at Fonte das Sete Bicas. This chapel was the first temple and point of reference for the local community. The Parish was canonically erected just over a century ago, marking an important step in its religious autonomy and the recognition of the growing population. The growth of the territory, driven by infrastructures such as public lighting and sanitation, was directly reflected in the development of the Parish, which accompanied the elevation of Senhora da Hora from parish to town and, subsequently, to city.
The Parish Church building observed today was inaugurated in 1963, a result of a project by architect Paulo Sampaio. Its construction represented a milestone, giving the Parish a temple with its own architectural identity. This building is recognized as a visual landmark in the area. Over time, several interventions have been carried out to preserve its heritage, including recent conservation and refurbishment works on the exterior, namely the roofs, metallic elements, walls, and bell tower, as well as the restoration of the stained-glass windows.
The Parish of Nossa Senhora da Hora plays a central role in the community life of Senhora da Hora. It is a place for gathering and upholding traditions. The Festivities in honor of Nossa Senhora da Hora, which were reactivated in the 1990s after a period of interruption, are a vivid example of the cultural vitality and local devotion, bringing the community together in celebration. The involvement of various liturgical choir groups in its ceremonies also demonstrates the Parish's strong connection to music and art, which enrich the experience of its visitors.
