Pala is a village in the municipality of Baião, located within the civil parish of Ancede e Ribadouro, positioned on the right bank of the Douro River. This location developed alongside the Pala Reservoir, a vast expanse of water formed in 1972, following the construction of the Carrapatelo Dam. Its privileged situation offers a serene and expansive perspective over the fluvial landscape, so characteristic of the Douro region.
The reservoir that bathes this area was named in homage to this ancient settlement, of great historical relevance in the Douro region. For a long time, the village of Pala has been recognized for the excellence of its citrus products, particularly for the quality of its oranges, an agricultural legacy that profoundly marks the local identity and is reflected in the surrounding landscape.
This location provides a pleasant experience by the water. The Pala Pier is a direct access point to the river, allowing boats to approach and offering a privileged view over the water mirror. The reservoir is, at times, a venue for powerboat races, lending a particular dynamism and an additional reason for visiting.
The Pala Garden, a redeveloped space, invites leisure and cultural enjoyment. It features an inviting grassy area, a square, and an amphitheater facing the river, ideal for moments of contemplation or for enjoying events that may take place there. A highlight is a wall with a waterfall that flows into a tranquil water mirror, contributing to the relaxing atmosphere. In the garden, it is also possible to walk a pedestrian trail and find a sculpture that pays homage to the boatman and writer Alves Redol, important figures connected to the history and literature of this Douro area.
