Situated in the parish of Penha Longa, in the municipality of Marco de Canaveses, Porto district, the Chapel of Fandinhães stands in an environment of remarkable serenity. It is framed by a surrounding natural landscape, marked by the imposing presence of the surrounding mountains, which provide a setting of great beauty and tranquility. Its somewhat isolated location contributes to an atmosphere of quietude, inviting contemplation of both heritage and nature. It is also one of the sites along the Route of the Romanesque.
The Chapel of Fandinhães represents a valuable testimony to the past, being what remains of a larger original temple. Its chancel, or presbytery, is the only remaining vestige of the original construction, rooted in the Romanesque period. The importance of this monument was recognized early on, having been classified as a National Monument in 1910, which underscores its exceptional heritage and cultural value to the country.
This chapel is a characteristic example of the Romanesque architecture found in northern Portugal. It is defined by its structural simplicity, which does not preclude the presence of elements that reveal the aesthetics and craftsmanship of the era in which it was built. When exploring the site, it is particularly interesting to observe the architectural details on the right side of the chapel, which allow for a deeper appreciation of its style and influences.
