Located on Rua de São Sebastião, this small oratory is situated in the Sé parish, in the heart of the city of Porto. Its position, on one of the streets that wind around the Morro da Sé, integrates it into the oldest and most historic urban fabric of the locality, very close to the imposing Porto Cathedral.

The surrounding area is characterized by narrow alleys and buildings with traditional architecture, which tell the story of centuries of Porto life. History and Religious Tradition

The Oratory of the Chapel of São Sebastião, also known as the Chapel of Senhor dos Passos, was built in the late 18th century. It was once one of several oratories belonging to the Convento dos Grilos, an institution linked to the discalced Augustinian monks.

These religious constructions were strategically dispersed throughout the city streets, marking the route for the solemn Procession of Senhor dos Passos, which took place annually during Lent. The extinction of religious orders in 1834 led to the suspension of these processions and the disappearance of most of the oratories. This one, along with another, is one of the few that have survived, preserving the memory of a centuries-old tradition.

Architectural Details

The facade of the oratory reveals a harmonious composition, despite its modest scale. A semicircular portal, meaning a full arch, serves as the entrance. This portal is topped by an interrupted curved pediment, a common feature in decorative elements of the period.

On this pediment, the conventual coats of arms can be observed, attesting to its original affiliation with the Convento dos Grilos. The simplicity of its lines and its careful integration into the urban landscape contribute to its charm, making it an interesting point of observation for those who appreciate religious architecture and local history.
