The Regueifa and Biscuit Workshop is located in the heart of the town of Valongo. This central position makes it an easily accessible point within the urban fabric, situated in a square that reflects the daily life of the town.
This space is dedicated to the preservation and valorization of an ancestral heritage: the art of making bread and biscuits in Valongo. Since the 17th century, the region played a fundamental role in supplying bread to the city of Porto, benefiting from its natural resources, such as water and firewood from the mountains, and the passage of the old royal road. Over time, baking adapted, giving rise to the famous biscuit factories that shaped the local identity.
The Workshop celebrates the hard work and passion of generations who, with their aromas and flavors, projected the name of Valongo beyond its borders. It is a tribute to the soul of the community and its deep connection with these delicacies.
Upon entering the Workshop, an interactive and audiovisual journey through the history of baking begins. The central exhibition, titled "From Grain to Bread", unfolds into several thematic areas: agriculture, milling, old bakeries, and the route that bread traveled until it reached the tables.
This detailed narrative, complemented by informative devices, allows for an understanding of the entire manufacturing cycle, from the cultivation of cereal to the final product, revealing the complexity and wisdom behind each piece.
One of the highlights of the visit is the "Hands On Dough Space". Here, visitors are invited to actively engage in the local tradition, having the opportunity to make their own biscuit. This practical experience allows not only to learn about the techniques of yesteryear, but also to enjoy an authentic sensory experience, involving the touch with the dough and the smell with the aromas.
The space also serves as a stage for activities that deepen the baking culture, exploring tradition and new culinary approaches.
