Professor Manuel de Barros Astronomical Observatory

Category: Civil Architecture > Astronomical Observatory

District: Porto > Vila Nova de Gaia > Oliveira do Douro > Monte da Virgem

Location

The Professor Manuel de Barros Astronomical Observatory stands on top of Monte da Virgem, an elevation located in the parish of Oliveira do Douro, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. Its elevated position gives it a somewhat isolated and tranquil character, on the edge of the urban area. Surrounded by vegetation of varying density, this location offers a calm environment conducive to contemplation, suggesting the beauty of the surrounding landscapes.

A Pioneering Vision

Founded in 1948 by Professor Manuel Pereira de Barros, this observatory was born from a singular vision: the need for the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto to have a space for the practice and deepening of theoretical studies in Astronomy. Professor Manuel de Barros, a scientist with remarkable insight, not only propelled its construction in challenging times but also demonstrated a rare aptitude for conceiving and supervising the creation of astronomical instruments. An example of this is the Meridian Circle Telescope, a rare piece of equipment worldwide, entirely designed here, which marked the history of astronomical observation in Portugal.

Heritage and Singular Structure

The observatory building is a material testament to the history of national astronomical research and, for this reason, has been classified as a Monument of Public Interest. Its architecture is distinctive, featuring a semi-oval metal structure covered with wooden shutters. It is characterized by two large rolling doors that move on rails, opening a gap of about three meters for direct observation of the stars. Inside, there are scientific instruments of notable historical and museological interest, which tell the story of the discovery of the cosmos.

A Center of Knowledge

Since its foundation, the Professor Manuel de Barros Astronomical Observatory has been an active stage for science. Currently, it remains a relevant center in the area of Earth and Space Sciences, dedicating itself to scientific research. In addition to its research aspect, the observatory plays a fundamental role in promoting scientific and technological culture, disseminating knowledge about the universe to a wider audience and fostering curiosity for space exploration.
