Located in the Vilar area, the Romantic Museum is situated within a well-known green space in the city of Porto, often associated with the Crystal Palace gardens. Its location provides a serene environment, away from the denser urban hustle and bustle, and is part of an area with notable landscape features.
The building housing the museum dates back to the 19th century, having been originally built as a leisure residence for the Pinto Basto family. This house, also historically known as Quinta da Macieira or do Sacramento, reflects the architecture and lifestyle of the wealthy bourgeoisie of the city during this period.
This location is historically significant for having been the last refuge of Charles Albert of Savoy-Carignano, King of Piedmont and Sardinia. Coming to Porto in exile after abdicating the throne, the monarch spent his final days in this house, where he passed away on July 28, 1849. This fact lends the Quinta a particular historical value linked to European events.
The Romantic Museum was conceived with the purpose of evoking the atmosphere and daily life of a wealthy 19th-century bourgeois residence in Porto, a significant period in the city's history and development. Specifically, to preserve the memory of King Charles Albert's stay, some of the spaces he inhabited in the Quinta were once recreated, such as his bedroom, the living room, and the chapel, based on contemporary representations.
