The National Press Museum is located in the area known as Revolta, in Porto, along National Road 108. It is situated near the historic Palácio do Freixo, in an area further away from the city center.
This museum was established with the purpose of preserving and disseminating the fascinating history of the press, newspapers, and graphic arts in Portugal. Its collection comprised a vast array of pieces illustrating the evolution of these fields over time.
It was a space that sought to showcase the journey of printed communication, displaying machinery, equipment, and other elements that told the story of newspaper and publication production.
One of the museum's distinctive aspects, when it was operational, was the possibility for visitors to interact with some of the exhibits. This approach aimed to provide a more direct and concrete experience of how ancient typesetting and printing processes worked.
Over the years, the museum promoted various initiatives related to the world of writing and the press. One of these was the well-known Love Text Contest, a cultural activity that even honored the journalist and writer Manuel António Pina, associating the institution with relevant figures in Portuguese culture.
It is important to note that, currently, the National Press Museum is closed. The closure was due to safety issues detected in the building housing it. The future of the museum space at this location is uncertain.
