The Penafiel Municipal Museum is located in the city center, housed in a historical building of great interest. It is specifically situated on Rua do Paço, an area that invites visitors to discover Penafiel's urban surroundings.
Its location in the Palacete dos Pereira do Lago gives it a special setting, easily accessible for those exploring the heart of the city.
The museum occupies a beautiful 18th-century palace, the Palacete dos Pereira do Lago. This building underwent a remarkable intervention, designed by the renowned architect Fernando Távora, and is considered one of his last works, later completed by his son, Bernardo Távora.
The palace's restoration allowed for the creation of a modern and functional space, respecting its original design while offering ideal conditions for exhibiting the collection and welcoming visitors.
By visiting the Penafiel Municipal Museum, you will have the opportunity to thoroughly explore the history, culture, and traditions of the region. The long-term exhibition is organized into five distinct thematic rooms.
The rooms focus on areas such as the Identity of the people of Penafiel, the Territory and its evolution, Archaeology revealing traces of the past, traditional Crafts that shaped local life, and the relationship with Land and Water, fundamental elements for the community.
The way information is presented in the museum is clear and designed for different audiences. Innovative multimedia supports are used to make the visit more dynamic and engaging. Interaction and pedagogy are central elements in how the museum shares its knowledge and collection, which covers archaeology, ethnography, and the history of the municipality.
The quality of the Penafiel Municipal Museum project did not go unnoticed. In 2010, it was awarded the prize for Best Portuguese Museum by the Portuguese Museology Association (APOM), an important recognition of its relevance and excellence.
