The Municipal Museum of Ethnography and History of Póvoa de Varzim is located in the urban area of Nova Sintra, in the heart of the town. It is housed in a remarkable and historic building, the Solar dos Carneiros, an old emblazoned house that marks the landscape of the area. Its central location facilitates exploration on foot from other points in the town.
This museum occupies the premises of the Solar dos Carneiros, a distinguished emblazoned house with roots in the 17th or 18th centuries. Entering this building is, in itself, an experience, allowing one to feel the atmosphere of a bygone era. The manor house is recognized for its heritage value, being classified as a Property of Public Interest.
Since its foundation in 1937, on the initiative of António Santos Graça, the museum has been dedicated to preserving and sharing the history and ethnography of Póvoa de Varzim. One of its main focuses is the community's deep connection to the sea, showcasing vessels, fishing techniques, traditions, and the daily life of the local fishing population. Additionally, it also presents other aspects of the region's rural and cultural life throughout the ages.
Among the museum's various exhibitions, the display dedicated to Siglas Poveiras stands out. This unique family writing system, used by the fishing community to mark their belongings, received a prestigious European award in 1980, serving as a remarkable testament to local identity.
The collection also includes archaeology pieces dating back to the earliest periods of regional occupation, including Roman remains. The museum further preserves collections of sacred art from the primitive mother church, historical pledges and other varied objects that illustrate the life and culture of Póvoa de Varzim throughout the centuries.
