The museum is located in a 19th-century building commissioned by Bernardo Martins da Nova, which also includes the chapel of S. Bruno. In 1836, Valongo became a municipality, and this building served as the Town Hall until 1989.
The Municipal Museum was inaugurated in 2001 with the aim of preserving local history. The renovation works combine original architectural elements with modern spaces.
The museum maintains a permanent exhibition on the ground floor that summarizes local history. In addition, it holds temporary exhibitions on various themes, occasionally occupying both floors.
Recently inaugurated, this house-museum honors António Dias de Oliveira, an important figure in local history who contributed to the elevation of Valongo to a municipality in 1836. The house houses a permanent biographical exhibition and a gallery with temporary exhibitions.
