The Port Wine Museum is located on Rua de Monchique, in an old area of the city, just a few minutes from the riverside quay. In the vicinity, granite facades and narrow streets, typical of the historic center, stand out.
Housed in a block of renovated warehouses, the building benefits from its proximity to the Douro River, offering an urban environment marked by the contrast between the calm waters and traditional stone constructions.
Set in an 18th-century warehouse, the space retains period elements such as wooden beams and stone walls. The intervention preserved solid doors and original facades, creating a dialogue between architectural heritage and modern exhibition.
In 2004, the building gained new life by receiving collections and equipment that bear witness to the history of Port Wine, from bottling tools to old pressing machines.
Through illustrative panels and historical objects, visitors discover the evolution of bottles and the phases of the Port wine trade. Two bottles of Vintage Waterloo from 1815 are highlighted, evidencing the longevity and prestige of this wine.
A short film presents trades related to the sector, such as coopers and sailors, while access ramps, braille texts, and adapted facilities ensure comfort for all visitors.
