The Monastery of Santa Maria de Vila Boa do Bispo majestically rises in the locality of Vila Boa do Bispo, in the municipality of Marco de Canaveses. Its implantation, on a slope of the left bank of the Tâmega river, offers it a remarkable presence in the landscape, adapting to the natural slope of the terrain. The site is accessed by a paved road with granite cobblestones, leading to a churchyard, an open space that precedes the monumentality of the monastery.
This ancient monastery has a history dating back over a thousand years. According to tradition, its foundation dates to between the 10th and 11th centuries, by D. Sisnando, Bishop of Porto, in a place believed to have been the scene of an important battle against the Moors. Throughout the Middle Ages, the monastery of Vila Boa do Bispo became an influential religious center, linked to the prestigious lineage of the Gascos de Ribadouro. Its prominence was recognized with papal privileges, allowing its priors the use of mitre and crozier, symbols of great distinction at the time. Its historical relevance was officially recognized in 1977, when it was classified as a National Monument, also integrating the Route of the Romanesque since 2010.
The architecture of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Vila Boa do Bispo is a fascinating blend of eras, where Romanesque and Baroque elements complement each other. Although the building underwent significant transformations from the 17th century onwards, which gave it its current Baroque appearance, it is still possible to observe vestiges of the original Romanesque construction, dated to the 12th and 13th centuries. One of the most original and noteworthy points on the main façade are the two blind arcades flanking the portal, whose voussoirs are adorned with carved animal figures, a distinctive characteristic of the Braga-Rates region in the Romanesque period.
Upon crossing the portal, the visitor is enveloped by an interior that radiates the Baroque spirit, creating an atmosphere of remarkable grandeur and luminosity. The chancel is an example of the decorative richness of the period, with its walls covered by blue and white tile panels, combining floral and figurative compositions. In 2012, a conservation intervention revealed the existence of ancient 16th-century mural paintings beneath the gilded carved coffered ceilings of the chancel, adding an extra layer of discovery to the monastery's heritage. In the nave body and other dependencies, the gilded and polychrome carving, along with trompe-l’oeil painting and chinoiserie-inspired decoration visible in the organ choir loft, enrich the space. The monastery also houses a valuable collection of medieval tombs, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, some inserted in arcosolia, which tell the story of important figures who marked the trajectory of this monument.
