Monte do Pilar rises in the parish of Penamaior, within the municipality of Paços de Ferreira. Situated in the Vale de Sus area, this elevated point stands out in the local landscape. With an altitude of around 520 meters, it is one of the most prominent peaks in the region, offering an isolated and rural setting.
Its summit position allows for wide visibility over the surrounding area, providing a unique observation point for those seeking an extended perspective of the local geography.
From the top of Monte do Pilar, the view encompasses a vast expanse. On days with good visibility, it is possible to see the sea line, observing the coastal cities of Póvoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde. The horizon also extends inland, revealing the imposing Serra da Cabreira.
This location is particularly sought after in the late afternoon, when the natural light transforms, creating a setting conducive to contemplation. Watching the sunset from here is a remarkable moment for visitors, who can appreciate the transition of colors over the Minho landscape.
Monte do Pilar houses several constructions that enrich its attractiveness. The Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Pilar offers a point of religious reference and an atmosphere of calm. Nearby, the Statue of Christ the King stands out in the landscape, contributing to the mount's visual identity.
For those who like to document their visit, there is also a swing on site. This invites a brief pause and allows visitors to capture the scale of the views, framing the surrounding landscape in memorable photographs.
One of the historical aspects of Monte do Pilar is the presence of an Radar Station of the Portuguese Air Force. This structure was built in 1958, in the context of the Cold War and Portugal's integration into NATO, playing a fundamental role in the surveillance of national airspace.
The station is composed of several buildings, among which stands out one with a radome (a spherical structure that protects the radar equipment), mounted on a central pillar. On the site, one can still observe an old radar support tower made of stone masonry, with its embrasures and antennas, evoking its original function of defense and communication.
